In the 1920’s the women’s styles were more on the “straight boyish look” side. It created an era where fashion could finally break away from the tradition and gender roles. The feminine and soft look came back in the 1930 where straight skirts and dresses were presented. Evening formal pants suits differed from normal day wear and different fabrics were used for these purposes. Women’s suits came in with a more feminine style compared to the suits of the early 1930’s. That is when pant suits transformed into what they are today.
Women, in the 1930’s, were expected to “re-feminize” themselves from the boyish look in the 1920’s. Several women wore men’s pants in a sense of subtle resistance, because of the banning of female employment and the wearing of pants. These pants sat high on the waist, had wide legs and were belted. This suit broke the tradition of what was expected of women.
Famous designers like Coco Chanel brought practical suits and day wear to the table. This helped women’s fashion break away from luxurious fabrics. Cotton material and the jersey was introduced in her designs and these were the perfect day wear for women.
The designer Elsa Schiaparelli created the wide-shoulder suit. She was known for her crazy and humorous accessories, like strange hats shaped like ice-cream cones etc. She brought in the shoulder pads for men’s suits and designed a masculine suit for Marlene Dietrich.
As the timeline went on and pant suits became more and more famous, women found themselves easily attracted to these fine outfits and their designs. It became such a big fashion trend that men and women both craved more of this fashion trend.
